For our final stop in Sri Lanka, before returning to Australia and starting new jobs, we wanted to spend 3 nights somewhere really special. As we were coming from the Cultural Triangle, Kandy was a logical spot to stay en route back to Colombo. We looked around a lot (see alternatives below) but eventually settled on The Hermitage, part of the Edwards Collection of luxury boutique hotels and villas spread around the island.
We arrived at dusk and were greeted by the lovely staff who were with us for the duration of our stay. The property is a traditional Kandyan house, set amidst 6 acres of natural forest and spread across 4 floors with each room looking out across the Victorian Reservoir. Many birds, monkeys, lizards and apparently wild boar live in the surrounding forest. The house felt at one with the abundant and ambient nature, with so many windows and open air spaces allowing the nature to be seen and felt. The design was the brainchild of leading Sri Lankan architect Channa Daswatte and was once a home to monks. It is now filled with beautiful, unique antiques and authentic Kandyan art and I certainly felt very zen after 3 nights here.
The windows are designed in such a way as to allow the cooling hill breezes of the Hunnasgiriya Range to run freely throughout the property. As if our our huge four-poster bed, and the immaculate (and again, enormous!) walk in wardrobe weren’t enough, we had the MOST amazing bathroom I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying. The bath was more or less a small swimming pool. I LOVED it. The shower was huge and open air.
But even more special, we were the only guests in the 3-bedroom villa and so we had the whole place to ourselves! We spent our last few days in Sri Lanka moving from the beautiful bedroom, to the pool, to the airy dining room and back again. It was the perfect way to end a month in this beautiful country.
And one last thing, if you do stay here – the food is great, but what they do exceptionally well is the Sri Lankan food, so make sure to order plenty of that!
