There are many different recipes and mixes out there for green smoothies, however, this is one of my favourites. It’s tangy, nutritious and delicious. The green smoothie, heralded for being a symbol of modern health, is such a good addition to anyone’s diet filled with leafy greens that are loaded with antioxidants and vitamins (all that great chlorophyll!).
The key when making a green smoothie is to make sure the fruit / vegetable ratio is well balanced (I tend to think a 70 / 30 ratio is ideal, though maybe start yourself with a 60 / 40 to ease into it). If you aren’t used to the taste of blended vegetables, start with a more fruit, and as you adapt you can increase the quantity of vegetables. Whilst fruit is great, they are higher in natural sugars so ideally you want to be getting us much vegetable goodness as possible.
I definitely recommend rotating your greens (i.e. don’t have the same greens / vegetables everyday) this will ensure you get a wide variety of nutrients and be sure to go easy on. For some rotation ideals see my Beetroot & Berry Smoothie, Caramel Papaya Smoothie or Banana Smoothie.
Green smoothies, as opposed to juices, are a complete food because they still have fibre, which is really important for the digestive system.
